Excerpt:

I’m breathing heavier than I’ve ever breathed before in my life. Tears are running down my face and I had no idea I was even crying. I have to get away from here. I look over at TJ. He’s faceless. He’s staring at me as though he’s staring at that wall behind me. He’s not saying a word, he’s simply just a shell.

I turn around to walk away when I feel him grab my arm and turn me around and he picks me up

“What the fuck TJ?” my voice; barely there is rough and cracked. He doesn’t say a word just carries me toward his room. He opens the door carries me through it and shuts it with his foot. Not saying a word he sets me down.

“What are we doing TJ?” he just stares at me again. I feel him unbutton my pants, I hear them unzip as he pulls them apart.

“TJ, you can’t do this….I’m not begging.”

Still, nothing comes from his mouth. I feel him grab my pants; he slowly pulls them down to my ankles. He taps the top of my foot. I pull my foot out of my pant leg. He does the same on the other side, I cooperate. He stands back up and gently removes the chain from my neck. He just as gently removes my shirt. I’m standing there in my panties and bra. He goes over to the wall and hits the light switch.

As he’s walking I begin to beg “Please TJ….no, please don’t turn on the-“

That’s as much as I got out of my mouth as I look down at my body. I see TJ slowly walk up beside me leisurely running his fingertips as gently as he can over the purple, pink and green marks that cover my whole abdominal area. He circles around me studying my body, using very little pressure as he touches my skin.

I close my eyes, I can’t even imagine at this point in time what he’s thinking

“TJ-“

“Shhhhh” that’s as much as I have gotten out of him in the last twenty minutes.

He circles around me one more time when he stops behind me. He unhooks my bra and come around the front of me. I have my arms folded across my bra. He gently pulls my arms down and I comply. He then goes back to my shoulders and pulls my straps down until it’s hanging from his one finger. I go to put my hands back up to hide my breasts.

“Don’t you even fucking think about it” he’s talking again in that low, terrifying voice

I drop my arms back down to my sides and turn my head to look away from him. He gently kneels back in front of me and slowly pulls my panties down my legs. I hesitate and begin to say his name but he beats me to the punch.

“Don’t say a fucking word”

He pulls them down to my ankles and again, I step out of them when he taps on my feet.

There I stand nude, bruised and extremely humiliated in front of the one man I never wanted to be naked in front of again.

Still kneeling in front of me he begins to slowly run his hands up my calves, then my thighs, he’s moving so slowly I’m wondering what he’s trying to figure out, how long the bruises have been there? Maybe he’s wondering when the last time I got my ass kicked was.

He reaches my stomach and rubs his fingers over my C-section scar from the twins, I squeeze my eyes shut. This is fucking killing me. He touches my ribs again, he makes his way up to my breasts, he just runs his fingertips over my nipples, they become hard and erect from just that little touch from his hands

He brings his hands down to around my waist and gently places his hands on my hips and pulls himself closer to me. He places tiny kisses on the bruising that covers my stomach. He moves over to my hips and ribs and places kisses on that area as well, he pushes himself back and moves to the other side and repeats. He eventually works his way back to the middle and kisses my stomach as though he’s kissing my uterus for the babies that I had been made to get rid of.

He doesn’t look at me but by the tone in his voice I know he is dead serious.

He whispers to my stomach, “I’m gonna kill him Elle” he stands up and doesn’t say another word. He walks nonchalantly into the bathroom. He closes the door behind him. I just stand there for a moment wondering are we done. Should I get dressed again? That’s when I hear all hell break lose. TJ is screaming, not saying nothing but just screaming at the top of his lungs. Glass is breaking, things are being thrown, and punches are landing against the wall. Toiletry items being pushed off the sink, landing and breaking all over the tile floor I hurry up and pull on my panties, shirt and shoes, I grab his shoes that I see by the bedroom door and I fly to the bathroom. I can’t see from the mascara tears that have blinded me. I throw the door open and see him standing in the middle of this enormous jumble of chaos that my words had created, I couldn’t keep my anger under wraps and I let everything except the most important secret out.

I look at TJ, he looks back at me; he’s huffing and puffing from the exertion, his eyes are bloodshot, his face is beet red. “Oh Jesus, TJ this is all my fault” I say through my tears. I walk over to him and ask him as pleasantly as possible “TJ….honey pick up your foot Sweetie, so that I can slip on your shoe, I don’t want you to cut yourself.” He obeys and I repeat the process of putting on his other shoe to get him out of this mess. We walk back through the bedroom and I grab some more jeans and a shirt for him. My clothes are fine, I grab them and head for the bedroom door. I open it and then shut it behind us and head for my suite so that I can get him showered and dressed, I did this; I needed to clean it up. We went into my room and I walked him into the bathroom. I went to the shower and turned on the water so that it could warm up.

I began to do what he did to me. I took off his shirt gently and when it stuck to his head I winced and apologized. I undid his pants and pulled them down leaving his boxers on. I removed his shoes before I pulled his jeans down his legs and then off his feet. Sitting on the side of the tub in his boxers I didn’t want him to feel uncomfortable so I thought I’d leave it up to him

“Would you like me to leave while you get in the shower?”

“I’m sorry Elle”

I stopped what I was doing and just stood there

“I’m so sorry baby” he said as he bent down and grabbed my cheeks in his hands and pulled me up to him.

“Shhhh, TJ…..Sweetie, none of this is your fault”

He was restraining himself, I could tell. His voice was shaky, his hands were wobbly and they didn’t know where to touch me. He was controlling himself by limiting his contact with me. He knew he was on the edge, as did I.

He still had my head in his hands as he pulled me up to his face, he touched his lips to mine still repeating over and over again. “I’m so sorry baby” as I was repeating “It’s ok, everything is fine”.

He sealed his lips over mine and began to swipe his tongue all through my mouth as though he was wiping away all the bad Bear had done to my mouth and I allowed him too. His kiss became harder as he started to lose control.  My hands flew up into his hair where I wrapped my fingers in to secure him in place I pushed him deeper into me. He broke the kiss and began to kiss down my neck with the lightest of kisses. “TJ babe, I’m not glass. As he continued kissing me he replied “Yes you are you should never have to hurt like this.” He began walking me backward as we passed by the shower he reached in and turned it off. I didn’t stop him. We continued walking straight back into my room. Our kisses so desperate for each other, we couldn’t get close enough. There was no turning back now. I couldn’t; I had to feel him within me. I needed to feel him. He curled his fingers around the bottom of my shirt, I lifted my arms to answer his unspoken question. I wanted him just as bad as he wanted me. We broke our kiss long enough to get my shirt over my head. My hands went down to the top of his boxers and began to push them down. His lips sucking my tongue deeper into his mouth, gently, he was nibbling against it. I unlocked my lips from his and was joined to him by my tongue and his lips. I smiled, this was my happiness. I felt his fingers dive into the corners of my panties when he let go of my tongue. “Say the words Elle, I have to hear them from you, I have to know that you want this just as bad as I do. This can’t be all just me” I looked him in the eyes for what seemed like minutes but was in fact seconds. I put my nose to his and opened my eyes to look in his and said it “Please TJ, I need you baby” he pulled my panties down and laid me gently on the bed. He continued kissing me as he reached down and pulled his boxers off. I grabbed around his neck and wrapped my legs around his waist and allowed him to drag me up on the bed where he had better access. “TJ honey, please, I’m begging you here.” He began slowly nibbling my skin at my throat and worked his way down. He licked my right nipple and I bowed up into him. He brought it between his teeth and bit gently; teasingly. He worked his way over to the other side and worked that breast as well. He sucked and licked and bit, I closed my eyes and relished the emotions pouring out of him.

“I’ve missed this baby. You’re still so beautiful. You will never fully comprehend what you do to me. ” As he’s talking he kissing, slowly working his way down. I’m just listening to his words until I feel him blow gently against my clit. I retract up the bed and pull my knees up to my chest and yell “No….anything but that, you can’t do that, no putting your mouth on it”

He sits back on his knees and looks up to the ceiling but his eyes are closed

“Elle baby, I’ve done it before on you, please I have to taste you.”

I continually shake my head. “No, anything but that you can’t put your mouth on it.”

Frustrated, he asks “why, why can’t I put my mouth on it?”

I put my head down on my knees and tell him “He says it taste disgusting, he tells me it’s not clean”

All at once, in once swift move he grabs my legs and pulls them down to him so that I’m now laying on my back. My legs are out to each of his sides and he’s got his face buried in between my legs. His tongue is flat and he is lapping up every drop of wetness I produce. “I’m gonna make you come with my mouth and I’m going to drink you up, you understand me Elleny? This is beauty. This pussy right here.” Lick. “This is my heaven”. Lick. “This is my sanctuary.” Lick.  “My refuge.” Lick. “That mother fucker doesn’t even deserve to lay next to this treasure.” Lick, lick. “He will never in his entire fucking piece of shit life be worthy enough to put his fingers against this pussy.” He opens me up wider to get to my clit, he tickles it with the tip of his tongue. “Do you feel that baby? Do you feel how good that feels….my tongue licking up every bit of you? That’s how you make me feel. My mouth is against the most perfect jewel that will ever be found….and it’s all mine. The wealthiest of wealthiest men will never find a gem as perfect as yours. It’s so beautiful; pink and bulging, just for me Elle….every bit of it mine.”  He continues flicking his tongue against me. I am crying.  I’m not sure if it’s because of happiness, sadness, or because I’m getting ready to come or maybe a little of it all mixed together.

I unwrap my fingers from the sheets and run them through his hair. I push his head against me; I’m on the verge of coming so I begin to lift my hips up and down quickly against his tongue. “That’s it Elle, work that beautiful pussy against my tongue, and come all over my face. You look so gorgeous when you ride my tongue. Just as I am about to come he sticks two fingers slowly into me and that’s what it takes to push me over. I scream at the top of my lungs. It has been so long since I’ve climaxed like this, it’s overwhelming to me. He continues to lap up all my wetness, moaning that sexy moan as he does it. “Give it all to me babe, I want it all. Everything he’s taken from you. I’m giving it back.”

I pull him up to me and insert his rock hard shaft in me as he begins to push slowly into me. “Oh fuck Elle, I’m trying to take it slow, tell me if I hurt you”

I nibble on his ear as I whisper “Do it TJ, I need to feel you move inside of me”

He slowly enters me completely and doesn’t move. He pushes his arms up so he’s hovering over me “Do you feel that Elle, do you feel my cock deep within you? This is how deep you are within me. You are so deep within me Elle, I can’t find a way to get you out.” He begins to pull out; I bow towards him and close my eyes. “I want your eyes Elle” I wrap my arms around his neck and bring my mouth up to his. I lock eyes with him as my lips barely touch his; I ask the same questions he asked me that night, seventeen years ago; “Tell me you need me TJ” he kisses me as he begins to speed up his thrusting “Elleny, I need you so much baby. I can’t function without you. For seventeen years I’ve been sleeping then you were brought back to me and now I’m finally awake” He’s now thrusting in and out of me faster, his breathing is speeding up. “Tell me what you want TJ, describe it” “I want you beside me for the rest of my life, when I wake up, when I go to sleep. I want you to give me babies and I want to be able to share with you this love that is overflowing inside me.” I begin to tense, I feel my orgasm building. I know he feels it too because he begins to moan and starts telling me “Fuck baby you’re squeezing me so fucking tight, I’m gonna come.” He thrusts twice, three more times filling me up with every drop of him. He eventually stops moving and just stays inside of me. “Can I tell you something and please…don’t get mad or upset” TJ pushes himself back up again and he rolls his eyes at me “Yes, but hurry before I change my mind” I take a breath “When Bear was pushing himself in my mouth he kept asking me if I liked the taste of what real love was but it was the most disgusting taste I’ve ever tasted in my life. Love shouldn’t be disgusting and nasty….should it?” Looking me in the face I could see he didn’t set himself up for a question like that, he gently pulled himself out of me and bent back down so that his face was between my legs again. He began licking and tongue-fucking me, moaning again so sexy and erotic. It was beautiful. Then he came back over me and looked me in the eyes “Give me your mouth babe” I gave him my mouth. He stuck his tongue in. I could taste a part of him mixed with what must be a part of me and it wasn’t bad. It was sweet yet salty and had just a hint of bitterness. I swirled my tongue in his mouth to taste more of our combination. He broke the kiss “Do you taste that Elleny? That’s what real love tastes like. Pure, uncorrupted, virtuous, UNTAINTED. That’s what straight- from-your-fucking-soul-love tastes like. You got me?”

He wiped the tear from my face and licked it off his thumb as he whispered “Let me put you back together. Babe, you’re not broken your just damaged. Remember… bendable….not breakable” he says as he kisses my nose. I turn my head from him and say quietly “TJ, there’s so much that you don’t know. Things that are shattering.” “Then when the time is right we’ll get through it…..Let me heal you Elle” I closed my eyes and lay my head against his and think the words….out loud “OK”

Excerpt:

Over an hour into my work out on the elliptical, sweat covered my brow and a few curls had broken free from my elastic band, making them stick to the sides of my face and forehead. When I grabbed a towel to wipe the sweat away, my legs felt wobbly and weak. I bought a bottle of water from a vending machine and headed out.

In the parking lot, I saw the sky had darkened considerably, elongating the shadows. As I walked back to my car I realized the birds in the nearby trees slowly became silent.

Stopping, I scanned the street. Not a single person was out. Even the cool breeze when I left the gym had stilled, almost as though everything had frozen in time.

Without warning, my stomach rolled. Almost instantly I felt nauseous as the familiar dread of darkness surfaced inside of me. The force became so overwhelming I doubled over, gasping for air.

As I focused on breathing, deep guttural laughter echoed in the stillness nearby. My head snapped up, my eyes searching for the man in my dreams. My brain worked in overtime, wondering how my dreams had finally crossed the barrier into reality.

The laughter came again, only closer this time. He wanted me, wanted me to surrender the light of life to dwell in the darkness of death. My panic increased as my heart thundered in my chest. I couldn't think clearly.

A few feet away, a man appeared, though he looked more or less the same age as me. Tall, well built with chestnut hair stopping at the hard angle of his jaw, and his eyes as black as a raven's feather. He didn't look like the same person from my nightmares. Not that it mattered–his presence still terrified me.

His lips twisted into a sinister grin, a mixture of evil and pain so clear I could taste it on my tongue. I tried to ease my panic and think clearly, but just like in my nightmares, I was losing.

"Who are you and what do you want?" Much to my surprise, my voice stayed even.

"You don't know, do you?" He tilted his head to the side, watching me with amusement in his dark eyes. He slowly held a finger in the air and then began making circular movements. The motion created his own personal whirlwind, lifting the hair around his face.

He continued to walk toward me, controlling the wind with his finger. My panic increased; my insides felt like they were being stretched thin, ready to snap in half at any given second.

"What do you want?" This time my voice quivered at the end.

"You have got to be kidding me, right?" He shook his head. "This is easier than I thought it'd be." He must have read the perplexed look on my face because he started laughing–hard. I would've been offended had I not been so freaking scared.

His thoughts and emotions become stronger with each step he took, overpowering my ability to shut off the inner darkness wanting to be set free. I wasn’t sure which way was up or down, left or right, and it didn't matter.

To Anna, horses were more than a fascination, they were everything. Luckily, she had the opportunity to spend every summer on her grandmother's horse ranch in Colorado. Life was perfect, until she received the devastating news that her grandmother had been tragically killed. Anna knew she was the only member of her family who could take over the ranch and hopefully find new homes for her grandmother's beloved Arabians.
Anna wasn't alone for long. Her grandmother had hired a local teenage boy to help tend the horses for the summer. Anna didn't stand a chance against Cody's quiet charm and the two rapidly become friends. However, even with the responsibilities of the ranch, Anna quickly discovers the secrets her grandmother had been hiding and a legacy that sends her on an adventure she never thought possible. An adventure in the saddle of a horse that wasn't a horse at all. Sabaska, her grandmother's favorite Arabian, was a Traveler; a magical being that could travel between worlds. With Anna at the reins, they find themselves trapped in a fight against evil with the highest of stakes… Their very survival.

Once again, Campbell lures us into a fantastical world in which animals remind us what it means to be human.

So this novel’s due to be released July 15th and I’m rapt to have been able to read it before then and offer a review for potential buyers! Now I haven’t really read fantasy/adventure novels before, so I’m glad such a unique horse filled tale was the first offered to me to read in this genre!

Campbell writes the tale of Sabaska, a bay Arabian mare who has a little more to offer than one would usually expect from an equine. Caught in a battle against good and evil, Sabaska is a Traveler, an intelligent being in the body of a horse.

The Travelers have partnered with humans to fight against an evil source that is seeking to destroy worlds.

After the event of her grandmother’s death, 16 year old Anna is devastated at the idea that her grandmother’s beloved horses may be sold off to random people. Determined to find them good homes, she puts forward an argument to her parents that she can spend the summer advertising and looking after the horses.

This starts Anna on an incredible journey of discovering why her grandmother loved her bay Arabian mare Sabaska so much.

Anna finds herself unintentionally caught up in the battle that was being fought well before she was born.

Sabaska’s Tale is an imaginative and entertaining read that looks at horses from a different angle. Although they are mythical creatures, the author’s horse knowledge is factual and put to good use in describing events that occur.

The book has some mild language and fighting scenes feature in it, but otherwise is friendly to the younger reader and will no doubt be enjoyed for its story line. When it comes out July 15, why not grab a copy?

Excerpt:

Footsteps came down the hall toward her grandma’s bedroom. Anna’s hands shook. They would have heard her footsteps if the carpet hadn’t muffled them. She crept away from the door and slipped into the bathroom. A small window with frosted panes opened on the roof. Though she had thought it odd at the time, her grandma had shown her an escape route. “Anna, in case there is a fire and you can’t get out the door, you can go out through this window. Come on, follow me. It’s safe.”
She set the shotgun down across the sink and climbed on the toilet and slid the window open. The bright moon clearly lit her path. She climbed into the warm, dry air and reached back for her gun. Just to be sure, she shut the window behind her, and then noticed a curious thing. It locked from outside.
What had Grandma been involved with?
Anna latched the window and crouched, holding the shotgun to her chest. It was one thing to follow her grandma onto the roof in broad daylight, it was quite another to escape intruders in the middle of the night. The light from the moon didn’t seem so bright now. Shadows danced everywhere. She wished the shotgun had a sling. She considered staying hidden by the window. They wouldn’t get through the window without breaking it.
One of the horses screamed. Anna’s blood ran cold, but it broke her out of her crouch. Before she could think better of it, she crawled across the roof, being sure to stay in the shadows. The shingles scraped her knuckles where she clutched the gun. They weren’t doing her jeans or her knees any favors either.
“Damn it.” The harsh whisper echoed in the night.
Anna flattened herself against the roof, heart trying to climb out of her chest. The next muttered curse might have come from the barn. Yet she heard both so clearly, they could have been right beside her. It must have been a trick of the night air. Anna clenched her lips tight, smothering a whimper and started crawling again. At the trellis, she paused, trying to decide what to do next.
“Maybe the Traveler is gone, M’lord,” a man said underneath her.
“It won’t leave the girl.” The second man spoke. She knew that voice. Blue shirts and mean sports cars flashed through her brain.
“The girl isn’t here,” another man said.
“She’s here.” He sounded very confident. “Just be ready to track them if they get a chance to run.”
The men faded out of hearing range.
You have to get off this roof! She tried to get herself to move, knowing she wouldn’t get a better chance.
A quiet, encouraging nicker caught Anna’s attention and a dark shape in a clump of evergreens moved slightly. The faint outline of horse dissolved into the shadows.
What the hell?
With no time to figure it out, she carefully scooted to the edge of the roof and climbed down onto the reinforced trellis. It was awkward with one hand occupied by the shotgun but the shadows hid hid the trellis from view and the foot and handholds were predictable. The faint scent of crushed leaves tickled her nose and she fought a sneeze. That would be just perfect; reaching the bottom without falling only to have a sneeze give her away. She made it, though she breathed hard and her limbs shook–only partially from exertion.
Okay, now what?
The dark shape moved again. If she could get to the horse maybe she could get away. Horses could go a lot of places trucks couldn’t. Maybe she could find a way to call the police. Of course she left her cell phone behind, but Sherrie’s neighbors were far enough away to be safe and would let her use their phone.
Anna checked for the intruders. Nothing moved so she darted across the open ground and into the bush. She hoped her sudden appearance didn’t startle the horse into making noise. The horse stayed silent, bumping her head against Anna’s arm in a reassuring manner. Sabaska, of course.
Why would the horse hide in a clump of trees waiting for her to climb off a roof? Sabaska turned to let her climb on her back. She leaned the shotgun against a tree and scrambled ungracefully onto the horse. Sabaska edged closer to the gun without being asked and Anna picked it up, not sure how to carry it, ride bareback and direct her horse, but Sabaska didn’t seem to care. Anna got settled and grabbed a hold of the horse’s mane while cradling the gun awkwardly.
“M’lord,” one of the men called more loudly.
Sabaska snorted, tossed her head, and started moving, slowly at first, and then her muscles bunched.
“No,” Anna whispered.
The horse ignored her and she held on, stifling scream as the little horse burst from the trees into a dead gallop.
“M’lord! There!”
“Catch them before they Travel!”
She clung to Sabaska’s back as the horse galloped toward a fence. Needing both hands to stay astride, she tossed the shotgun to the ground and held on. Anna screamed as Sabaska leapt the fence. In the air, she came off Sabaska’s back, but the little horse landed underneath her and did a funny jig to keep Anna from falling.
The men shouted behind her, but as Sabaska ran, the air grew muffled and dense and the voices faded. Anna thought she might be passing out and clutched the horse tighter. Sabaska slowed and trees scraped against her legs and arms.
Leafy trees.
Cold frosted her breath and she started to shake. No deciduous forest surrounded her Grandma’s property and though it could get cold in the summer in Colorado, there wasn’t usually snow on the ground. Overwhelmed, she stopped thinking and clung to Sabaska’s back while the little horse pushed through the trees. Anna hoped she knew where she was going. The numb, suffocating feeling came and went several times that night. Anna thought she saw the sun high in the sky a few times, but when Sabaska finally did stop, the sky had just begun to lighten. Incomprehensible trees surrounded them. She blinked at the red blur of leaves and smooth silver bark and then passed out. In her dreams, an unseen entity chased her until a distant voice woke her.
“Sabaska! What are you doing?”
Her horse snorted and though Anna wanted to sit up, exhaustion sent her back to sleep.

Teasers:

Teaser 1:

Sabaska pushed through her grief and looked at Amir, considering. I need a new partner. This world has to be saved. Sherrie can’t have died in vain.

Amir nodded. Who?

Sabaska looked at her fallen partner, cradled in Raymond’s arms. She would miss Sherrie. They’d Traveled together for over thirty years and she’d been a wonderful friend.

Anna.

Surprised, Amir twitched an ear toward her. I don’t think that’s what Sherrie meant when she asked us to look after her.

Sabaska snorted, and then sighed. I know, but she’ll make a good partner.

Teaser 2:

“Well…” She hadn’t considered riding Sabaska. Her grandma never mentioned it as a possibility and it stuck in her head that this was Grandma’s horse and no one else rode her.

But Grandma was gone and Anna needed to ride her at least once to determine what to say to buyers.

“Okay. Sure.”

Sabaska tossed her head happily and whinnied before heading to the barn.

Anna stared after her, dumbfounded.

“Right. That’s weird.”

Teaser 3:

Sabaska and Amir halted, and Anna stared at the world below her. They stood high on a mountainside, the air cool and crisp against Anna’s bare arms. A slight breeze ruffled through Sabaska’s mane and carried a strong pine scent. She could see the valley directly below her, though mist shrouded it, obscuring most of the details. Mountain peaks filled the world, most shrouded in the same mist.

“Raymond, this is amazing. I feel like I’m on top of the world.”

“There are perks to this job. On your world we’d be far above timberline. As it is, not much lives up here and people rarely come up this high. You’re seeing a sight few others will ever get to see.”

Anna grinned. How could she possibly give up something like this?

Quotes:

1.

“Are we in a labyrinth?”

2.

“Not bad, girlie,” the ghost said. “Not bad at all. Personally, I thought it would be a waste of my sleeping dust. Figured you’d die, but since you didn’t, well done. By the by, my name is David.”

3.

“I will get what I want, and there is nowhere you can Travel with that horse that I won’t find you.” His voice turned low, icy, and dangerous.

Excerpt:
The quiet drone of a train’s chugging grew louder as it approached but was still eerily muted, a graceful ghost passing in the night. Minimal light shone from the front car as Jet stepped forward to align himself with its path.

“How do we know where it stops?” I asked, positioningmyself next to him.

“We don’t.”

“So …”

“So we have to make a run for it.”

“You mean jump?”

“Yup.”

“As in … jump onto a moving train.”

“Yup.”

“This is crazy.”

“A dangerously disturbing level of crazy. No worries, baby.” He patted my shoulder with a smartass grin. “It’s just your area of expertise.” I narrowed my eyes at him, storing that one away for a future retaliation jab of my own.

Adrenaline spiked as the train grew closer, every nerve ending a live wire to the heart pounding violently in my chest. Jet grabbed my hand, glancing at my gun. “I’ll go first. Once I get a good grip, I’ll haul you up. Whatever you do, don’t stop running. And don’t let go.”

“I should go first,” I raised my voice to speak over the rumbling of the track. “You’re hurt. You’re going to need upper body strength.”

“I’m fine. Don’t fight me on this.”

Blood pounded hot in my ears, my heart rate jumping and hair blowing wildly around my cheeks as the train began to whizz by. The rush in my veins propelled me forward the moment I spotted an opportunity, and I launched into a controlled sprint. Springing upward, I lunged forward and latched on to the side of the car, the metal handle slippingbeneath my sweaty grip. I shrieked and latched on harder, hearing Jet’s voice thunder behind me. The train’svibrations rattled against my chest, sending my senses on high alert.

Clenching the handle until my knuckles hurt, I bit down on my lip to ease the tension and yanked hard to the right, feeling a heavy latch click and shift beneath my fingers. The door slid open and I hauled myself up and inside, grabbing onto the side of the frame to steady myself before flipping around to reach for Jet. He was running full speed after me, his arms pumping tight and sharp at his sides as he tore forward.

“Come on!” I yelled, extending one arm. It only took him a few seconds to catch up, his agile form sending his body off the ground and up onto the car before I could blink. With a loud shout, he clamped onto my arm, his other hand flying over his chest to cradle his gun. I was thrown onto my back with a thud before I knew what hit me, his body covering mine with a crash that left me seeing stars.

“Fucking crazy woman!” he shouted over the rail’s relentless roar, louder now that we were level with it. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” His heat pressed into me, his arms caging me in as he stared down into my eyes, his nose aligned with mine.

“Fulfilling my sole purpose to drive you mad, it seems.” I couldn’t help it. The rush sent me sky-high and an explosive laugh escaped my lungs. I shook beneath him, my breath heaving against his chest.

“Damn it, Skylla!” He dropped his head as he gasped for air. “Seriously!” he added for effect, but there was nothingserious in his voice now. He was laughing too, just as deep, just as euphorically as I was, and I decided right then that the sound of Jet’s laugh was almost as sexy as his full lips and ripped body.

“Wanna go again?”

“You’re reckless. I can’t even look at you.”

“You’re crushing me.”

His head lifted, those blue eyes settling on me as his laughter slowed. “You deserve it.”

My hand shifted and found his injured hip; my fingers brushed the bandage through his shirt. He flinched. “And you need to admit when you need help.”

Pushing himself up, he rolled off me and sat back on his heels, wincing and gripping his side, his lips pulling back and teeth visibly grinding with the motion. I sat up and scooted forward, mindful of the gaping railcar door. I reached up and slid it shut, slamming it with a loud grunt until I felt it lock into place. The loud rumble of the wheels hitting the track was muted now, but the rattling hum still thumped away from outside, filling the dimly lit car with a shaky buzz.

“I’m fine, he said.

“Fine. Play it your way. I’m going to see if I can find you some medicine.”

I helped push him backward to prop him against the wall, peeling his backpack from his shoulders first. “Try and rest,I’ll see what I can find out.”

“I’m not letting you wander around these cars alone. Not fuckin’ happening.”

“If you don’t rest and get medicine for that wound soon, I’ll be stuck wandering everywhere alone. That ointment won’t cut it. You’re going to need antibiotics. It’s starting to get infected.”

His gaze snapped up to mine and held my stare. “Finger on the trigger.”

“Fire on your mark.” I smirked.
